Dent du Géant

Along with Mont Blanc and the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent, as it’s called, is one of the massif’s mythical peaks, its characteristic shape defining the Courmayeur panorama.

With its distinctive profile, the Dent du Géant is the most clearly visible peak from Courmayeur, almost its symbol.

The north face of the Dent rises above the Gigante glacier, while the south face dominates the Val Ferret.

The ascent of the Dent du Géant is one of the most coveted by mountaineers for its unusual features and history. The first ascents of the Punta Sella (4,009 m), the south-west summit of the Dent and the Punta Graham, the north-west and highest peak at 4,014 m, were made in 1882.

The Dente du Géant exerts the same fascination as ever not just with adults but also with children: the mountain features in one of the most beautiful stories told in the town, the tale of Rhémy de Noel, Courmayeur’s Father Christmas.
