A burst of colours, sounds and flavours from local tradition, blending with a contemporary, playful — and often irreverent — spirit: this is Carnival at the foot of Mont Blanc, or rather Lo Camentran, meaning “the one that enters Lent”.

On Shrove Tuesday, Lo Vioù e la Viéille from every hamlet — the traditional masks of the old man and the old woman — walk through the village announcing the arrival of Carnival with the sound of cowbells, while the delicious aroma of seuppa, the local soup, spreads through the streets. The soup is served in Piazza Abbé Henry at lunchtime, prepared with fontina cheese, sausages and rye bread.

Joy, light-heartedness and a sense of playfulness fill the day, with two special events:

Tuesday 17 February: Lo Camentran – the Carnival of Courmayeur
Announcement in the hamlets with Lé Beuffon, the symbolic costume of the Courmayeur Carnival.
Serving of the traditional Carnival minestrone, accompanied by local cheeses and cured meats, organised by Proloco Comité de Courmayeur.
Children’s entertainment with baby dance and group games.

Saturday 21 February: Carnival on Ice
Courmayeur Sport Center
Skate in costume!
For all young skaters, a snack and entertainment are included in the admission ticket.
